strange flakes

A few times I've acquired some shrooms that have had little metallic flakes on the surface of the caps or floating around in the bottom of the baggie. Has anyone else ever seen such a thing? I've only ever seen the flakes on the red capped variety of shrooms. Are they good, bad or neither? I've tripped pretty hard but don't know if the flakes had anything to do with it. Thanks for any help.

Although I have no way of knowing what it is you actuallly saw, I think I can safely say that it was not metallic flakes that you saw, at least not purely metallic anyways. It is probably flakes of silica, the vermiculite that the shrooms grow on, that you are referring to which should be basically harmless if consumed, but of course it would be dumb to do so.

Thanks much AngelWeed. I kind of figured it may have something to do with the growing medium, but having never really seen vermiculite, I didn't have a clue.
