Grow Kit Manual (0) When the kit arrives, take action immediately. Do not store the kit for more than a few days. If you really have to wait, store the kit in the fridge, not in the freezer. (1) Open the package carefully, don't use a knife, you could ruin the plastic bag. Do not touch the white air-filter at the side of the bag, to avoid contamination. (2) Take the tape of the container, take the lid off and place the grow kit inside the plastic bag so that the open end of the bag is up. (3) Spray the kit until the top soil is slightly moist, do, at this time, not poor water directly into the kit. Note! Only spray water onto the kit when there is no growth visible yet. (4) Close the plastic bag by folding the top two inches down, and use two paperclips to keep it there. (5) Place kit and plastic bag in a place out of any direct sunlight, but not in the dark. Near a radiator will do fine if you don't live in (sub-)tropical area's. (6) Optimal temperature between 20 and 23 degrees celcius, 68 and 74 degrees farenheit, but don't worry if the temperature is not steady all the time, the kit won't be harmed by a lower temerature at night. Don't place it too close to a radiator, temeratures over 35 degrees (95 F.) are harmfull. Higher, natural air-temeratures in tropical area's are no problem. (7) Turn the kit around every day or two, so that the other side of the kit now faces the radiator. This will result in a more gradually grown flush. (8) After a few days you will see white mycelium spreading over the top soil; out of this the mushrooms will grow. Do not open the bag until the first mushrooms are 1.5 centimeters (half an inch). As soon as they reach half an inch, slightly open the bag and leave it open for an hour and a half, to give it some fresh air. (9) After a few more days the mushrooms will come up. Harvest the furst flush completely just before the largest ones open their caps. Take the smaller ones out too, it's better to not interfere with the kit too often, wait until there's another full-grown flush with harvesting again. Leave the ones smaller than half an inch. As soon as they really start growing check every day, they grow very fast. Remember to twist the shrooms out, don't rip or cut, this is best for the soil. If the stem of the shroom turns brownish, there's too much moisture in the bag, so open it up for 1.5 to 2 hours, to let some out. As soon as you see that the soil has shrunk so that it at places does not touch the container anymore, poor some water into the kit. Slightly squeeeze the container at one side so that there's an opening through which you can poor water to the bottom of the kit. Don't poor it on top of the soil. (10) If circumstances are optimal you can reap 175 - 250 grams of fresh mushrooms (17 - 25 grams dry) from a single kit in three or more flushes. (11) It will take one to three weeks before you can harvest your first flush, one week later the second, and another week after that possibly the third. Don't give up too easily, it happens that after a month more shrooms will still come up. As soon as the mycelium starts turning green or purplelish (this is an infection with bad types of fungi) do not open the bag again but throw it away. (12) ENJOY! Rooting and growing cactus cuttings: instructions You will need a 4-6” clay pot and the soil mix detailed below for the best results. It really is worthwhile to mix up your own batch of specialized cactus soil. I have been experimenting with cacti soil mixes for years and this is what I have found works best for this specie, and many, if not most, other species as well. I have studied the soil types of many different cacti in their native range… And I can locate wild specimens by locating the correct soil type. This is a good potting mix: - One part commercial bagged topsoil. - One part commercial bagged cow manure, compost/manure, or compost. - One part crushed limestone “minus grade” (This bagged limestone, available from large nurseries and landscape companies, is the finest screening from a rock crusher. It contains limestone particles ranging in size from sand to pebbles.) - 1 cup or so of powdered or pelleted limestone (or dolomite) per 6' pot. Peter's Professional All-Purpose Plant food (hardware or garden center) You can substitute crushed oyster shell or crushed cuttlebone (pet or feed store) or finely crushed marble for the minus grade limestone. I just call around and pick up a bag of the crushed stone for about $3.00. Mix the ingredients and break up any lumps, you want the soil to have lumps no larger than your rock chips. If you are rooting a bud or small stalk, fill the pot to within 1-1/2 inches to the top, packing the soil down tightly with your fist while filling. Center your bud or cutting and pack soil mix around it to within ½ inch of the top of the pot. You want about 1 to 1-1/2 inches of the cutting in the soil, just enough to hold it stable. Make sure to pack the mix tight. Then soak the pot slowly and thoroughly with plain water. You can set the pot in a bucket and fill with water to the pot rim, let soak 15 min, remove & let drain. Place the pot in full direct sun if possible, the more light the better. For fastest rooting and healthiest plants it helps to dig a hole in the ground in a sunny location and sink the pot in up to the lip. This provides some temperature and humidity stabilization that helps rooting and encourages much healthier growth. They neglect better and you will water less as well. During the growing season water the pots whenever it feels dry when you press your finger into the soil surface. Rooting should occur quickly when the cactus stalks are set up in full sun, the pots are pots sunk into the ground, and the soil mix is kept cool and moist. Usually 2-3 weeks. You will see new growth on the tip when roots have begun to set. When the growth resumes, begin feeding:. Add two tablespoons of all purpose chemical fertilizer per 5 gallons (20 liters) of water for starts. This is a 20-20-20 NPK fertilizer with trace elements: Trace elements are essential for good color, growth and potency in cacti… “Blue” Pedro is grown by maintaining the proper levels of: sun, feed (nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus & trace), pH and water... Lots of water. In summer, when mixing feed for fully rooted and growing Pedro's, try to add some pure urea to your feed. For peak summer growing , feed with a mixture of 2 tablespoons of 20-20-20 (see above) and 3 tablespoons of Urea (46-0-0) in five gallons (20 liters) of water. Don't let the pots go completely dry during the growing season if you can avoid it. Outdoors in many areas summer feed is supplemented with rainwater, if not give the plants a break from feed about every second or third watering… Plain water, or weak lime water once in awhile rinses out accumulating salts. Rinse the pots well with a hose or rainwater. And lime with a few tablespoons of powdered rock per pot every few months if you are feeding heavy. A word to the wise: don't feed any heavier or you will burn the roots and don't let the pots dry out and get hot in full sun if you feed heavy. Roots like it rich, cool, and moist. When using the Urea formula above, add a tablespoon or two of powdered limestone or dolomite to each pot every two-three months to maintain a "sweet" soil chemistry. Soured pots will still grow, but the color and potency of the cactus is second rate, and it will not grow as fast. The lowest the pH should get is 6.8, any lower and San Pedro will start to grow out pale yellow. Instructions (1) Empty the container of all its contents and make sure that all components of the kit are accounted for and in good condition (10 seeds, cactus soil, drainage gravel, cover sand). (2) Take the container (or some other container of choice) and place the drainage gravel in the bottom of the container. (3) Fill the container with the cactus soil mixture and gently push the soil down (but not too much). (4) Take your seeds and distribute them evenly over the surface of the cactus soil mix. Do not push them into the soil.. The seeds are delicate and will crush if mishandled. (5) Sift a thin layer of cover sand over the seeds to a depth of 1-2 mm. Loosely cover container with lid. (6) Moisten the top of the kit with 25-50 ml of water. (7) Place the box in an area that receives diffused sunlight and maintains a steady temperature of around 25 degrees C (77 F). Placing the kit in direct sunlight could potentially damage the new cacti that appear. Top water the cactus kit when soil feels dry to the touch (be careful not to disturb areas where seeds are present). Place the kit back in its place. Keep the humidity high by keeping the kit lid loosely on fungicide to discourage contamination but stop after the first few months. Once the cacti have grown to about ½ ca high, completely remove the kit lid and move to an area that receives partial sunlight. Then, after 4 months, a fertilizer low in nitrogen may be used and sunlight may be gradually increased to full exposure in about one year. Turn the kit once in a while so that all cacti receive equal intervals of sunlight.
